What is range of motion?
Range of motion is how far a joint can move in each direction, like turning your head, raising your arm overhead, or bending forward. It can shrink after an injury, a long period of inactivity, repetitive work, or simply years of the same postures.
Limited motion in one area often shifts strain somewhere else. A stiff upper back, for example, can make the neck and shoulders work harder.
Who this care may be appropriate for
People who notice stiffness that makes everyday movements harder, such as checking a blind spot while driving, reaching a high shelf, bending to tie shoes, or getting up from the floor.
Common reasons patients ask about it
- Trouble turning the head
- Limited reach overhead
- Stiffness bending or twisting
- Tight hips or ankles that affect walking
Commonly used as part of care for
Individual results vary. Your care plan depends on your exam and health history.
What to expect
Health history and exam
Dr. Davis reviews your health history and examines the area of concern. Your first visit takes about 30 minutes.
Your options, explained
You hear the exam findings and whether this care is a reasonable option for you. You decide how to proceed.
The treatment
Dr. Davis measures your movement and compares sides, then explains options that may include spinal adjustments, extremity adjustments, dry needling for tight muscles, and movements you can practice between visits. Progress is re-measured over time.
Follow-up
Dr. Davis checks how you responded and adjusts the plan as needed.
Questions about mobility and range of motion
Is range of motion treatment the same as stretching?
It can include stretches, but it also involves in-office treatment of joints and muscles that are restricted, and measuring your progress.
How is my range of motion measured?
Dr. Davis watches and measures specific movements, such as turning your head or raising your arm, and compares the left and right sides.
Is stiffness just part of getting older?
Some change with age is normal, but stiffness that limits daily activities is worth having checked.
